27 January marked the anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. This day is commemorated worldwide as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Every year, to mark the occasion, Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow hosts a scientific session organised by the university, the Krakow Medical Society and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

Opening the meeting, Jagiellonian University Rector Professor Jacek Popiel expressed his conviction that as time passes and the direct participants in the tragic events of more than 80 years ago are passing away, the need to perpetuate the memory of those events and to pass on the historical truth to future generations increases. This memory particularly resonates with the current bloody conflicts around the world – in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza.

Prof. Igor Gościński, president of the Krakow Medical Society, who, together with Prof. Aleksander Skotnicki, is co-initiator of the meetings on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, presented information about the historical achievements of the group gathered around the ” Auschwitz Notebooks”. This publication is today one of the best systematised sources of knowledge about the Holocaust.
