Jagiellonian University tops in applications to the European Patent Office

Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow has returned to first place in the ranking of Polish institutions submitting the most applications to the European Patent Office. 

The number of applications filed at the European Patent Office (EPO) by Polish companies, universities, and research institutes, totalled 615 (522 in 2021). In terms of growth rate, Poland is in second place among EPO members – only Malta is ahead. In 2022, the number of applications from Poland increased by 17.8 %.

As many as 9 of the 10 most active Polish patent applicants are universities or research institutes. The Jagiellonian University (UJ) (20 applications), which was overtaken last year by the Silesian University of Technology, returned to the leading position. This time, the University of Gliwice (Silesia) is in second place ex aequo with the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (18 each). Just behind them there is the University of Warsaw (13) and the only company – Polpharma (11).
