Krakow scientists working on the material for the absorption of petroleum substances

02.11.2021

The scientists of the Krakow University of Technology are developing the technology of a highly effective sorbent for absorbing petroleum substances. The implemented project will allow introducing to the market an additive to paints and anti-corrosion coatings, as well as mortars and adhesives, having antibacterial and biocidal properties and increased resistance to the damaging effects of mould and fungi.

The project is conducted by Krakow University of Technology in cooperation with Specialized Mining Enterprise Górtech Sp. z o. o. as part of a project that received funding from the National Center for Research and Development.

The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate technologies for the production of highly effective sorbents and functional materials based on diatomites, i.e. compact sedimentary rocks, the main component of which are diatom skeletons, made of amorphous silica – opal. A related mineral substance is diatomaceous earth.

These minerals are widely used as filter materials, sorbents, carriers of plant protection agents and catalysts, thermal insulation and polishing materials.
