The STOS Competence Centre building at Gdansk University of Technology has been ceremonially opened and the Kraken supercomputer officially launched. The complex, at the heart of which is a complex of specialised server rooms, is one of the most modern IT centres in this part of Europe. The total cost of the investment is almost a quarter of a billion PLN.

The Kraken PG supercomputer has been hidden underground, on the slope of Mount Szubieniczna in Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and the edge of the university’s campus. The complex is made up of two blocks, which include work spaces for scientists and engineers, a conference room and numerous technical rooms.

Later this year, Kraken will become one of the most powerful supercomputers in this part of the continent. Its computing power will be a tremendous support for scientists working in fields such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, nuclear energy, environmental technologies or the development of artificial intelligence.
