The PhD theses of two researchers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environment of the Gdańsk University of Technology were awarded by the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk and the Gdańsk Scientific Society for outstanding achievements in the field of technical sciences.

PhD dissertation of Dr Eng. Dominika Sobotka “The study of the effectiveness of nitrogen removal from sewage in a sequential reactor with granular anammox sediment”, describes a method of improving the energy efficiency of sewage treatment plants. The scientist proposes to replace the processes of nitrification and denitrification used today with alternative technologies based on the process of “anaerobic” oxidation of ammonium nitrogen.

The research of Dr Eng. Katarzyna Szepietowska “Polynomial Chaos Expansion in Bio- and Structural Mechanics” refers to the innovative method of probabilistic support of surgeons in the treatment of abdominal hernia.
