A new seat of the Faculty and Department of Genetics has been opened at the Medical University of Wrocław, together with a modern genome sequencing laboratory. The renovation and construction work cost PLN 4.5 million from the university’s budget. They provided the unit with new tools for scientific research and precise patient diagnostics.

The new building has rooms for students, offices for researchers and a laboratory equipped, among other things, with fluorescence microscopes, machinery for DNA isolation, DNA amplification and genome analysis and sequencing.

The sequencing of the genome allows specialists to see the full composition of DNA, which includes information on, for example, eye colour as well as hereditary diseases. It makes it possible to read all the genetic data that affect the functioning of an organism.

The laboratory will have a scientific, teaching and clinical function. This is because there is an outpatient clinic at the Department of Genetics, which serves patients from southern Poland.
