Five bee families live on the roof of the Wroclavia shopping center, in the heart of the capital of Lower Silesia. This is a joint venture of the shopping center and the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, which looks after bees.
– There is one family in each of the five hives – from 50,000 to 60,000 bees. Of course, only suitable breeds of bees are chosen for such breeding, like the Kraińska bee – says Paweł Migdal from the biology and animal breeding department who was responsible for the preparation and moving of the bee families.
About 100 kg of honey can be obtained from this apiary in the season. Residents can facilitate the work of bees by planting velvet, verbena, heathers and heaths, lavender and nasturtiums on their balconies.
The first metropolitan apiaries were established in Paris, today they are also in Munich, Copenhagen, Zurich, Warsaw and Krakow. They are also created in Wrocław – at the Voivodship Office building and in the Capitol musical theater.
