The Faculty of Oceanography at the University of Gdańsk has started the operation of the modern “Oceanograf” scientific-research catamaran. The ship has wet, measuring, sterile, thermostatic laboratories as well as a seminar and computer room.
– The first impressions of the nautical capabilities of the unit are very good. Representatives of the crew inform that the unit is very stable and the advantages of a huge working deck, which offers a double-hull design, can not be overestimated – says Dr Mariusz Sapota, director of the Institute of Oceanography.
The “Oceanograf”, is a catamaran with a total length of 49.5 m and a width of 14 m. The lateral height is 3.80 m, the height of the upper deck is 6.55 m. The draught of the ship is only 2 meters. The catamaran is to conduct biological, chemical, physical and geological studies of the environment and nature of the Baltic Sea and to provide students with didactic classes.
