The only university network of sensors for air quality assessment in Poland has been operating for over three months on the Wrocław University of Science and Technology campus. The information provided by the network has already been read by several thousand employees, students and residents of Wrocław.
The system consists of twenty devices, located on the university campuses, in Geocentrum at ul. Na Grobli and in the dormitories. The equipment used in the project consists of innovative measuring devices using a method in which the measurement consists in detecting light reflected from dust particles in the air. On the basis of the number of counts and the intensity of the scattered light, the instantaneous dust concentration is calculated.
The aim of the project is to measure concentrations and analyze pollutants responsible for the so-called smog. During the tests, the influence of buildings, meteorological conditions and urban plants focused on a small, closed area on the spread of pollutants is also checked.
