The Institute of History at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Institute of History at the University of Łódź, and the Polish Historical Association Branch in Olsztyn are organising the 10th academic session of the series “Private Life of Poles in the Nineteenth Century” on 29-30 November 2022 under the motto “Laughter, humour, satire”, which shifts attention to the cultural and social role of laughter in the lives of Poles in the era of the Partitions.

The aim of the conference is a comparative view of the roles and meanings of humour, comedy, laughter and ridicule in the history, culture and literature, press, iconography, musical works of Poles in the 19th century.

Poles in the period of building their national identity, national liberation struggles, post-insurrection repressions, dynamically changing socio-economic reality were not devoid of a sense of humour.
