Dr Eng. Mariusz Sobol from the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Computer Science of the Opole University of Technology has developed an innovative phantom of the skeleton of the pelvic area in 3D printing technology. The model will be used to prepare treatment procedures that will improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy for tumors in the pelvic gynecological areas and in the urinary bladder.
Works on the solution for the Opole Cancer Center were started in autumn. They were divided into three stages. First, a 3D model of the human skeleton in the pelvic area was developed on the basis of tomographic cross-sections and then printed. Next, a skin coating was printed – a form that will be poured over with an appropriate substance.
The last step was sealing the model and pouring its interior part with an appropriate copolymer, which, due to its permeability to X-rays, will represent soft tissues in the phantom.
