Prof. Monika Adamska from the Faculty of Building and Architecture at the Opole University of Technology is reconstructing the image of Silesian cities of the 18th century. She is conducting her research at the Map Department of the State Library in Berlin.
The Berlin Map Department is the main centre for cartographic collections in Germany. It has unique and extensive cartographic collections on all continents and countries, including Silesia. The collection includes more than one million maps, numerous atlases, 800 globes, vedutas of cities, as well as literature and magazines on cartography.
A special source of knowledge for the Opole researcher is the unique military atlas “Krieges Carte von Schlesien”, the only copy of which is currently in the State Library in Berlin. Its title pages, a key part of the project, show plans of as many as 67 towns in Silesia at that time on a scale of 1:14,000. For some towns in the region, this is the first plan in their history.
