PhD student from the University of Silesia wins the Silesian part of the Three Minute Thesis 2021 competition

09.12.2021

Joanna Ryszka from the University of Silesia won the Silesian part of the Three Minute Thesis 2021 competition, initiated by the Australian University of Queensland. The task of doctoral students who take part in it is to present their research for 3 minutes, in an understandable and attractive way.

In her doctoral thesis, the laureate deals with the influence of British-Japanese relations on the state of borrowings from the Japanese language in the British version of English and on the way British people express themselves about Japan.

– Just as relations have changed, the narrative, that is, how the British talked and wrote about Japan, has changed. In addition, it had an impact on the loanwords from Japanese. When there was no relationship, there were no loanwords. As the war broke out, the British began to speak badly of Japan more often. When the relationship was warmed, such words as ikebana, sushi, ninja or karaoke entered the general English language – said Joanna Ryszka during the competition.
