25.06.2021

Sandra Żukowska and Beata Chmiel, PhD students from the Doctoral School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Gdańsk won an award from the Institute of Rural and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences for preparing a project aimed at combating transport exclusion.

In total, 108 works were submitted for the competition “My smart village. Idea and Fact”. The jury selected 18 winners. The PhD students from Gdańsk took third place in the Idea category. For the competition, they prepared a design for a pedestrian and bicycle route connecting the village of Głuszyno in the Pomeranian Voivodeship with the nearby railway station.

The station in Głuszyno is well connected with major cities in the region. The shortest way to the station, however, is put through the farmland.

– For a healthy person in the right footwear it means about 10 minutes away. However, for an elderly person or a woman with a pram, it is an impassable barrier. This is how the transport exclusion looks like in practice – says Beata Chmiel.
