Polish Academy of Sciences creates new map of Poland based on satellite images

02.03.2021

At the request of the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), a map of the coverage of Poland was created on the basis of Sentinel-2 satellite images recorded in 2020. It was made by the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The spatial resolution of the map is 10 m. The map was created completely automatically using machine learning and is based on a series of photos recorded from April 1 to September 30, 2020, with less than 20% cloudiness.

The map will allow to update the existing databases and observe changes taking place in the landscape, including monitoring of cities, road infrastructure, forest areas and water reservoirs.

The presented map covering the entire territory of Poland was created by combining 49 scenes and “cutting” them along the borders of the country. Each scene is developed with at least 10 photos.
