Polish and American scientists investigated the infectivity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus

Professor Rafał Bartoszewski from the Department of Biology and Pharmaceutical Botany of the Medical University of Gdańsk is one of the authors of the paper “SARS-CoV-2 may regulate cellular responses through depletion of specific host miRNAs” published in the prestigious American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology.

Researchers from the Medical University of Gdańsk, the Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the American University of Alabama in Birmingham, have found that the infectivity of the virus may be partly due to its action as a “microRNA sponge” and introducing beneficial changes to the virus in host miRnomies.

Research conducted by scientists from the Medical University of Gdańsk and the Jagiellonian University was financed by the National Science Center.
