Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology will work on identifying substances that can be an alternative to antibiotics. The international project MarBaccines received funding from the National Center for Research and Development.
The MarBaccines project aims to search, identify and characterize bacteriocins produced by bacteria inhabiting the Sea of Marmara and exhibiting bactericidal activity. Thanks to their unique properties, they can become an alternative to antibiotics. They are safer for the environment, and their use will not develop drug resistance.
Microbiologists, geneticists, structural biologists, chemists, environmental engineers, computational chemists and bioinformatics of the Silesian University of Technology and TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center in Gebze, Turkey, are tasked with identifying and characterizing new bacteriocins and analyzing the safety of their applications.
