Marta Seczyńska from the University of Cambridge, a graduate of the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow, has been awarded the Birnstiel Awards – a distinction for doctoral students with outstanding achievements in life sciences at the molecular level.

In addition to the Pole, this year’s laureates included Margarete Diaz Cuadros (Harvard Medical School), Christy Hong (University Medical Center Groningen), Ioannis Sarropoulos (Heidelberg University), Michael Skinnider (University of British Columbia) and Zhexin Wang (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology).

Each laureate will receive a diploma, a statuette and a cash prize of €2,000 at a gala event in Vienna later this year.

Marta Seczyńska presented her master’s thesis titled ‘Heme oxygenase-1 promotes activation of muscle progenitor cells leading to rhabdomyosarcoma development’ at the Jagiellonian University in 2015.  She then continued her studies at the University of Cambridge. She has been a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds fellow since 2018. She will soon start her postdoctoral studies at Stanford University.
