Polish scientists developed a new method of destroying cancer cells

05.07.2021

Scientists from the Center of New Technologies at the University of Warsaw (UW) and the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw under the supervision of Prof. Jacek Jemielity and Dr Joanna Kowalska, in cooperation with researchers from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), have developed an effective method of delivering nucleotides to cells, which causes the destruction of cancer cells. The results of their work were described in the scientific journal “Chemical Science”.

In the article “Cellular delivery of dinucleotides by conjugation with small molecules: targeting translation initiation for anticancer applications” published in the journal “Chemical Science” the scientists for the first time proved that “cap analogs effectively delivered to cells are able to stop the process of neoplastic cell division, causing their destruction (planned death of cancer cells) ”. Proving it was one of the biggest challenges in the conducted research.
