Specialists from Johns Hopkins University, NASA and the Southwest Research Institute have come to Warsaw to assess the design of the GLOWS (GLObal solar wind structure) photometer being developed by specialists from the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). Once the inspection recommendations have been implemented, the Polish research institute will proceed with the construction of the device.
GLOWS is an entirely Polish instrument, which is being designed and entirely developed at the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). For the first time in the history of Poland’s cooperation with NASA, Polish scientists will provide the entire instrument; they are also responsible for designing the experiment and analysing the data.
The photometer, constructed in Poland, will study the effect of the solar wind on the hydrogen gas in the heliosphere. It will also allow analysis of the interstellar distribution of neutral hydrogen (ISN H) and the solar radiation pressure acting on hydrogen atoms.
