Poznań University of Technology conducting research on soft tissue models for the reconstruction of the facial skeleton

11.10.2021

Scientists from the Poznań University of Technology are conducting research on soft tissue models for the reconstruction of the craniofacial area. Advanced 3D printing technology is used in collaboration with the teams of Prof. Filip Górski from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Dr Jacek Banaszewski from the Święcicki Clinical Hospital.

3D printing has been used by the hospital for several years, mainly in the process of pre- and intraoperative preparation. Initially, the models concerned hard tissues – the mandible in the craniofacial reconstruction surgery. Currently, Professor Górski’s team has started research on soft tissues – on the tongue with neoplastic changes.

The use of 3D printing technology and vacuum casting of plastics allows producing models consisting of elements of different hardness and facilitating preparation for the procedure and support during the operation.
