World-famous biochemist and microbiologist Prof. Jan Potempa, Jagiellonian University in Krakow received an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He was honored in particular for groundbreaking research on the ability of oral bacteria to break the blood-brain barrier and their role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The work of Professor Jan Potempa made a huge contribution to understanding the molecular basis of the virulence of pathogenic microorganisms in a human mouth. His research confirms that good oral health can contribute to maintaining mental health, – explains Prof. Bruno Loos from the Academic Center of Dentistry in Amsterdam.

Research conducted by Prof. Jan Potempa on the possible role of pathogenic oral bacteria in the development of Alzheimer’s disease gained worldwide publicity in 2019. Simultaneously, the scientist filed several patent applications, initiating the development of drugs aimed at suppressing bacterial proteolytic enzymes.
