Prof. Randall J. Platt, an expert in genetic engineering, has won the Stanislaw Lem European Science Prize for 2021. The laureate is from the USA, is 35 years old and works at the Department of Biosystems Engineering at ETH Zürich.
Prof Randall J. Platt has established a scientific team in Switzerland to develop and refine applications of indicator cell technology. Together, they aim to create completely new methods of biomedical engineering.
The result of this work could be cellular machines capable of detecting a variety of molecular, chemical and physical characteristics of their environment and continuously recording this information using a DNA-based storage medium.
The Stanislaw Lem Prize was established in 2021 to commemorate the 100th birthday of the outstanding Polish science fiction writer. It is awarded to young scientists (under 40 years of age) studying or conducting research in the European Union and associated countries.
