Dr Michał Szymański, Professor of the University of Gdańsk (UG) from the Department of Structural Biology at the Inter-University Faculty of Biotechnology UG and the Medical University of Gdańsk’ will carry out a project ‘Structural organisation of the human mitochondrial replisome’.

The scientist has won a grant of almost PLN 4.8 million for his research in the SONATA BIS 12 competition of the National Science Centre. The long-term goal of the project is to understand the structure of the human mitochondrial replisome, the functional cooperation between components of the replisome and the mechanistic basis of the causes of human disorders resulting from mitochondrial dysfunction.

One in approximately 2,000 people is at risk of developing a mitochondrial disease during their lifetime. This makes mitochondrial diseases one of the most common groups of metabolic disorders. However, to date there is no cure or approved treatment for them.
