Przemysław Czarnek’s first 100 days as Poland’s Minister of Education and Science

The most important achievements of the Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek within the first 100 days of office include allocation of PLN 1 billion for pay raises for university staff, PLN 440 million for investments at public universities, PLN 65 million for distance learning, working out a draft of the Academic Freedom Package and launching cooperation with NASA.

In the first days after taking office, Minister Czarnek initiated works on the development of the Academic Freedom Package, which will guarantee the constitutional rights to express philosophical, religious and philosophical beliefs within academic institutions. Currently, the provisions are in the consultation stage.

He also signed an agreement between the Ministry of Education and Science and the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences allowing Polish scientists to receive funding for the NASA project.

The first 100 days in office of Minister Przemysław Czarnek brought also more support for the universities for additional investments and distance learning.

The most important activities of the new head of the Ministry of Education and Science include:

– allocation of PLN 1 billion for pay rises for university staff. The salaries of university employees will increase with 1 billion PLN by the end of 2021.

– allocation of PLN 440 million for investments for public universities. More than 80 investments implemented by 57 public universities will be co-financed by the Ministry. The funds will be also allocated for the modernization of dormitories.

– allocation of PLN 65 million for universities for distance learning. Public and private universities received additional funds to purchase education tools and conduct distance learning.

– allocation of PLN 62 million for Silesian public universities. Additional money will be allocated to Silesian public universities for educating students and conducting research taking into account the specificity of the region and the needs of the transformation.

– allocation of PLN 90 million for higher medical schools. 9 Polish higher medical schools and their diagnostic and laboratory staff will receive additional financial support.

– allocation of PLN 60 million for 50 academic and vocational higher schools. The Minister Przemysław Czarnek allocated additional funds to strengthen the capacity of Polish higher medical schools, including providing students with additional personal protective equipment.

– allocation of PLN 22 million for the construction of Collegium Medicum of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. The Ministry agreed on co-financing the construction of the Collegium Medicum building of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. The Collegium will include teaching rooms, specialized laboratories and medical simulation rooms.

– “Medyk NAWA” project – launching scholarships for doctors and nurses. The Ministry of Education and Science is encouraging doctors and nurses to return to Poland. Under the project “Medyk NAWA”, doctors who return to Poland will receive annual scholarships – 7.5 thousand PLN per month and nurses and midwives- 5 thousand PLN per month.

– Polish scientists will cooperate with NASA. Polish scientists from the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences will be the only foreign scientists to cooperate with US NASA experts on the implementation of a project that will allow for better recognition of the heliosphere and its reaction with the Sun’s immediate galactic surroundings. The Ministry of Education and Science will allocate PLN 16 million for this purpose.
