Radio telescope of the Astronomy Center of the Nicolaus Copernicus University to be renewed

25.07.2019

A radio telescope operating at the Astronomy Center of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Piwnice, will undergo a major refurbishment. This complicated and very costly project will be financed entirely from the budget of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The Ministry of Science has given the University PLN 4 million, which consists of a three-year funding for the radio telescope and the resources needed for its refurbishment, which will start in the spring of next year. The Astronomy Center predicts that the radio telescope will be out of service for half a year.

The radio telescope RT-4, which was created in 1994, is the largest radio telescope in our part of Europe. The so-called headlamp of the device is 32 meters in diameter, almost 900 square meters, and consists of 336 aluminum panels. The supporting structure moves on the set of 4 trolleys, which allows not only turning, but also moving the radio telescope. The device is part of the European and global VLBI interferometric network.
