The systematic search for and removal of fallen wild boars should be an essential way to control African swine fever (ASF). This is one of the recommendations developed by the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Białowieża. A report summarizing many years of research has just been published.
African swine fever is an infectious viral disease of wild and domesticated pigs, causing very high mortality among infected animals. The ASF epidemic is causing huge economic losses and serious ecological and social consequences in Europe and Asia.
In the European Union, the epidemic began in 2014 and then the Polish Academy of Sciences began its research of the Mammal Research Institute. The scientists collaborated with the National Veterinary Institute in Puławy, United States Department of Agriculture and Animal and Plant Health Agency (Great Britain).
The research summary report was published on September 1, 2020.
