Research by Polish scientists to accelerate the diagnosis of esophageal cancer

28.05.2020

Researchers from the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Center in Krakow, the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Exeter (Great Britain) and the Beckman Institute (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – USA) have conducted research that will facilitate the rapid and automated diagnosis of esophageal cancer.

Researchers focused on supporting cancer detection through a combination of infrared imaging and the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Thanks to this approach, it is possible to develop an effective model that will allow histopathologists to confirm the area of the esophagus in a much shorter time and automatically.

Meanwhile, the scientists are planning to create a full model for the classification of pancreatic cancer taking into account different types of cancer, its stages, inflammation and detection of the operating margin using infrared imaging.
