Marta Kozakiewicz-Latała from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University of Wrocław has won almost PLN 200,000 for her work on using 3D printing to produce advanced forms of medicines. So far, no medicinal product manufactured using 3D printing has been registered in Europe.

Under the project, funded by the National Science Centre, the researcher will work on understanding the physical phenomena that are relevant to the development of incremental technologies and the production of personalised medicines.

The success of the project would enable a process of manufacturing drugs, tailored to the needs of specific patients. This would offer the chance to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the risk of side effects. By using different materials, the tablet could contain different active substances in the individual layers – a patient taking multiple drugs could take them in one personalised lozenge.
