Researcher from Krakow developing method inhibiting gliomas

06.08.2020

Dr Maja Grabacka from the Faculty of Food Technology of the University of Agriculture in Krakow (URK) proved in her experiments that the development of gliomas (brain tumors) can be inhibited by introducing tumor cells into an energy crisis using fenofibrate – a substance used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

The Krakow researcher made her discovery thanks to the funds from the Pomost program implemented by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) in 2010-2013 as part of the Innovative Economy Program and addressed to parents – scientists who wanted to return to research after a break related to caring for young children.

Dr Grabacka conducted research in cooperation with Prof. Krzysztof Reiss and Prof. Augusto Ochoa of the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, Louisiana State University (LSU), and the Louisiana Cancer Resarch Center (LCRC), an organization of research institutions involved in cancer research.
