Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski is the first Polish researcher in the life sciences to receive an ERC Advanced Grant. The researcher from the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw currently holds the Prof Wacław Szybalski Honorary Chair at the interuniversity Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk.

The aim of Prof Dziembowski’s project is to understand the mechanisms of mRNA processing in cells and throughout the body, which will enable the development of a new generation of mRNA-based therapies. The ViveRNA project will run for five years with a budget of nearly €2.5 million.

MRNA vaccines were a breakthrough in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, paving the way for mRNA-based therapies and enabling their wider use in medicine. However, the processes of mRNA metabolism at the level of the organism are still not fully understood, limiting the possibilities for improving vaccines and RNA-based therapies.
