Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski, head of the Chair and Department of Medical Immunology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, won the first Leaders of the Future competition organized by Forbes magazine.
Prof. Trzonkowski conducts research on regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) and their use in the treatment of diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Together with other specialists from the Gdańsk university, he was the first in the world to use Treg cells in the treatment of type 1 diabetes in 2011. In addition, his team has been using Treg cells for several years in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) with a good clinical effect.
The jury of the ranking awarded 10 people out of 140 candidates, appreciating their commitment to work on innovations, as well as their readiness to take action. The winners include scientists dealing with genetics and biopharmacy, as well as entrepreneurs, creators of start-ups focused on new technologies and setting new trends.
