Dr Maciej Kurcz, ethnologist from the University of Silesia has become a member of the international team of scientists implementing the project “Soba – the heart of the kingdom of Alwa” in Sudan.
Scientists are researching Soba to understand how it looked and functioned, when it was the capital of one of the southernmost Nubian kingdoms – Alodia in the Middle Ages. Its remains are located on the right eastern bank of the Blue Nile, several kilometers from Khartoum. Polish researchers have already located two districts with the remains of houses made mainly of dried mud bricks.
The scientific team, led by the Silesian scientist, is primarily responsible for contacts with the local community living in contemporary Soba, in order to gather folk data preserved in stories, legends, superstitions and also emerging from individual human stories.
