Researchers from the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn, commissioned by the Warmia and Mazury Marshal’s Office, began monitoring tests for ticks. They want to develop a threat map for the province.
– In Warmia and Masuria, there is a high percentage of ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, or spirochetes that cause Lyme disease. Our research shows that among removable ticks from domestic and wild animals, mainly from deers of that 24% are infected with spirochetes – says Dr Małgorzata Dmitryjuk from the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, UWM.
The final results of the research will be posted on the website of the Marshal’s Office in Olsztyn. The researches will allow to unertake preventive and educational activities and should help the sanitary and epidemiological services to work with vulnerable groups (foresters, farmers, energy services) as well as physicians and residents of the region.
