Researchers from Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz are conducting field research in the area of the Toolik Arctic Field Station in Alaska. Their aim is to determine the potential impact of melting permafrost on the chemical composition of surface water, in particular the potential for the release of organic compounds from the permafrost group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The field research includes water and sediment sampling and hydrological measurements of the study watercourses and lakes. The scientists will be in Alaska until mid-September.

They are planning to study the release of persistent organic pollutants from permafrost in eastern Siberia, where there has not yet been any research on the subject. As an area that is less polluted than western Siberia, yet has a thick layer of permanently frozen ground, this region is ideally suited to test whether the problem is local or global in scope.
