A team of researchers from the Institute of Physics at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń has won a competition for a research grant in the ministerial programme Polska Metrologia II and will carry out a project ‘New quantum technologies for optical patterns of particle concentration, pressure and gas temperature’.

The aim of the two-year project is to eliminate systematic errors in the measurement of the intensity of molecular spectral lines by cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) related to the non-linearity of the light detection system, and to demonstrate the measurement of gas concentration based solely on a comparison of the measured and ab intio calculated line intensity and known gas temperature.

Such a measurement will demonstrate a new optical standard for gas concentration and pressure and, in the future, allow the development of non-contact measurement systems based on accurate, high-resolution spectroscopy. The project will be carried out in cooperation with the Central Office of Weights and Measures.
