Researchers from Piła studying algae diversity in Spitsbergen

24.07.2018

The Nadnotecki Institute of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Piła organized a research expedition to Spitsbergen (Svalbard, Arctic). The expedition results from the Pilski Institute’s specialization in conducting studies and research in the field of water management and environmental protection.

The research cruise on the Polish yacht S / Y Hi Ocean One is supported by the Nord Foundation, the city of Piła and the association of disabled divers Krok po Kroku HSA in Piła. The seven-member team will conduct research along the west coast of Spitsbergen to learn about the diversity of grooves (Dinophyceae, Dinoflagellata).

They plan to learn the diversity of species of algae present in the water depth, dwelling on the bottom (including sperm forms), on the water-land border and in freshwater land habitats of Spitsbergen. The team has research experience in extreme cold water conditions in the Tatras as the researchers from 2013 dive in high-mountain lakes.
