Researchers from Poland and the Czech Republic investigated and described the phenomenon of color aberrations in birds. The results of the work have been just published in the prestigious IBIS journal. The group examining almost a thousand cases in 74 bird species included Prof. Piotr Tryjanowski from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań.

Researchers used online data sources – films and photos of unusually colored birds posted on the Internet. Such tools are increasingly used in ecological and evolutionary research, but scientists emphasize that the use of such data is not appropriate for all research questions, and their use in analyzes must be conducted carefully.

The research shows that unusually colored birds, mainly ravens, blackbirds and sparrows, can be found practically everywhere, but most often in and around large cities. This may be due to the greater number of people documenting observations and / or living conditions in an environment favorable to mutation.
