Researchers from the Department of Systematic Zoology of the Institute of Environmental Biology, Faculty of Biology, at the Poznan University, professor Leszek Rychlik and Krzysztof Kowalewski, described the composition and role of water shrew venom as the first in the world.
The results of their research have been published in the Journal of Mammalogy. The water shrew is one of the few species of shrew mammals that are poisonous. To determine the usefulness of the venom of this species, a series of experiments was carried out, to observe water shrews hunting victims of various sizes. As it turned out, in contrast to other representatives of this species, water shrew is able to defeat their victims more efficiently.
