Prof Alina Sionkowska, and Dr Sylwia Grabska-Zielińska from the Faculty of Chemistry at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń have won the silver medal of the Inno Wings International Invention Competition in Lublin for their innovative ‘Collagen with magnetic properties’.

By embedding magnetic particles in collagen materials, which can be implanted into the human body, it is possible to remotely control the orientation of collagen fibres through an external magnetic field.

The invention has commercial potential, and the solution of the researchers from Toruń could end up on shop shelves in the future. Research has indicated that the use of collagen with magnetic properties improves skin tone and condition, smooths wrinkles and stimulates skin regeneration.

Collagen research conducted over the past 20 years is summarised in an article by Prof. Sionkowska published in the prestigious journal Progress in Polymer Science.
