Researchers of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań working on improving the proton LED

09.03.2021

Scientists of the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań created the world’s first proton LED diode. The diode works in an aquatic environment and shines thanks to the flow of protons. Scientists have proved that such a diode can function well. Currently, they are working on its improvement.

Chemists under the supervision of Prof. Jerzy Langer replaced organic polymers that ensure the mechanical stability of the system with inorganic materials – silica gel and alumina (they are more temperature resistant and do not conduct electron current).

After modifying the system and optimizing the operation, the device could be used as a previously unknown light source. A proton LED diode emits white light with a sunny light shade unlike traditional diodes, where such an effect is usually achieved thanks to the composition of green, red and blue colors, e.g. from the emission of three LEDs or three phosphors.
