A team from the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical University of Wrocław has been awarded the “Golden Synapse” for the most significant article on psychiatric topics. The text “Risk factors of deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia: Results from a cross-sectional study’ was published in the journal ‘Revista de Psiquiatría y Salud Mental’.
The aim of the study was to compare risk factors for deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia. They included gender, family burden of schizophrenia diagnosis, seasonality of birth, low birth weight, caesarean section delivery, history of traumatic experiences in childhood, substance abuse and smoking during the first episode of psychosis were included.
The analyses conducted showed that male gender and low birth weight were risk factors for the development of deficit schizophrenia. In contrast, substance abuse during the onset of psychosis is a risk factor for non-deficit schizophrenia.
