Researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Poznań – as the first in the world – investigated how birds use tram tracks in cities. The results of their research were published in the specialized journal Transportation Research.

The tests were carried out in Poznań: eighty 100-meter sections were drawn from the entire tram network, and then each of them was visited three times in the spring season and three times in the winter season. During the observation, birds present on the tracks, on the roadside as well as on the traction and roofs of stops were recorded for researching their behavior.

The analysis of the recorded films shows that the jackdaws may be aware that the tram is moving along a certain trajectory (tracks) and that they are safe on the side of the track. Secondly, they can predict where from the tram can move, so they know that … the traffic in Poland is right-handed!
