20.09.2021

The long-awaited Lexicon of Silesian culinary heritage by Lidia Przymuszała and Dorota Świtała-Trybek has been published by the Publishing House of the University of Opole. The lexicon is a kind of thematic dictionary of the language and culinary culture of the region.

The lexicon is the first such extensive and multifaceted collection of Silesian culinary lexis and culinary delights of the region. The study includes 974 entries and 40 original photos of Silesian dishes. The core of the source base are materials collected by the authors during field research conducted in 2008-2020, which covered 156 towns (rural, small-town and large, industrial cities) from Silesian and Opole voivodeships.

The purpose of this interdisciplinary work is to present the richness of cuisine in connection with the tradition and culture of Silesia. The authors of the lexicon did not only archive the culinary vocabulary preserved in the common consciousness of Silesians, but also presented the less known ones.
