Scientist from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology investigating a mechanism that blocks the penetration of coronavirus into the cell

05.06.2020

Professor Łukasz Berlicki from the chemical department of the Wrocław University of Technology conducts research on the mechanism blocking the penetration of coronavirus into the human cell. The aim of the scientist is to design molecules that will inhibit the interaction between the proteins of the virus and human.

On the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is the S protein that forms characteristic structures commonly known as the crown. The first stage of propagation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is the contact of this crown – more precisely the S protein with the human protein ACE2.

Research by Prof. Berlicki relates to the development of molecules that will block the interaction between these proteins. Therefore, it will be necessary to construct chemical compounds that bind to the S protein of the virus in such a way as to prevent its contact with the human ACE2 protein. The project is implemented as part of a special program of the National Science Center, financing research on COVID-19.
