The National Center for Research and Development will subsidize the project of the Gdańsk University of Technology and LOTOS Asfalt “Ecological Asphalt”. Its goal is to create an innovative surface that will contribute to the reduction of air pollution in the area of the road lane. The value of the project is over PLN 5 million.
The project “Ecological asphalts” was created in response to the challenges posed by air pollution in Polish cities. Concerning for the health of the residents, the university has launched works on an innovative asphalt pavement modified with a photocatalyst to reduce the content of harmful substances (NOx, VOC) near the road lane.
The technology used in the project is based on innovative hybrid photocatalysts, which ensure a higher reduction of NOx concentration in asphalt under the influence of solar radiation, and additionally enable the degradation of carcinogenic organic compounds into simple and harmless inorganic compounds.
