Scientists from Gdańsk University of Technology develop universal hybrid parallel drive

08.09.2020

Researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology have created a universal hybrid parallel drive that can be used on ocean yachts. Thanks to the cooperation with the catamaran manufacturer Wave Blue the system will be tested on a real vessel.

The tested hybrid drive system increases the comfort of sailing the vessel and is universal. On its basis, many propulsion and energy functions can be generated – e.g. the electric drive of the yacht, the cooperation of both engines in a hybrid system, or the energy management system on the yacht.

The idea behind the creation of such a system was the need to equip the yacht with a large amount of electricity to meet fully the needs of vacationers (e.g. constant air conditioning without generators making noise at night, or production of desalinated water). The order for the drive was received by the University company Excento, while scientists from the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Shipbuilding took care of the design and prototype of the system.
