Scientists from Poznań to determine how many people in Poland have passed COVID-19 asymptomatically

24.07.2020

The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań is going to determine how many people in Poland have had COVID-19 asymptomatically, and what genetic factors affect the course of the disease. Free testing for coronavirus will help in this.

Researchers will use tests to detect antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus as part of a project funded by the National Science Center. Moreover, they will compare the nucleotide sequence of the TMPRSS2 and ACE2 genes in people with severe and asymptomatic disease by analyzing the genetic material. Thus, they will be able to determine whether there is a genetic predisposition to severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Scientists also intend to test thousands of chemical compounds using technologically advanced high-throughput screening and molecular virology methods to identify inhibitors of the TMPRSS2 protein and thus find an effective drug against COVID19.
