Scientists from the Gdańsk University of Technology to develop an electronic system for SARS virus testing

27.05.2020

An interdisciplinary group of scientists led by Dr Eng. Robert Bogdanowicz, Prof. of Gdańsk University of Technology will create an electronic analytical platform for a very sensitive testing of the SARS virus, responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology in cooperation with the Gdańsk Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine and computer modeling specialists from the California Institute of Technology will create the impedance measurement platform iCovid, which will be used to study the mechanisms of attacking human cells by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Researchers will use special electrodes made of very small pieces of diamonds to connect to the ACE2 receptor, used by the virus to invade human cells. In this way, the scientists will be able to study very precisely how the virus uses different proteins to bind and attack cells. The project is financed by the National Science Center.
