Scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń improving mobile robots

03.11.2021

Scientists from the Institute of Technical Sciences of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń have developed an algorithm that will allow mobile robots to avoid dead ends and avoid obstacles. This will increase their efficiency and save energy.

Toruń researchers won a grant under the INCOOP call as part of the Initiative of Excellence – Research University. The results were published in the prestigious “Energies” journal in the article “Efficient Local Path Planning Algorithm Using Artificial Potential Field Supported by Augmented Reality”.

In order to program the mechanism of blocking the entrance to a dead-end in the robot, its reality should be extended with a virtual wall that will prevent passage. When a dead-end is detected, a virtual wall is created and an additional obstacle on the left or right side of the robot to guide it in the right direction. This combination of mobile robotics and augmented reality technology allowed the publication of research results.
